Hydroponic and substrate cultivation have become mainstream planting modes in modern commercial greenhouses. Compared with traditional soil planting, the root environment of crops is more controllable, yet the absorption path of plant growth regulators is quite different. Improper application can easily cause phytotoxicity or unstable regulation effects.

In hydroponic systems, roots are directly immersed in nutrient solution. Regulators added to the circulation solution spread rapidly to the whole root zone. Crops absorb active ingredients much faster than in soil. Growers need to use lower concentrations and avoid long-term continuous dosing. It is also critical to check the EC and pH value of nutrient solution before addition. Abnormal pH will change the activity of regulators and reduce utilization efficiency.

For substrate cultivation, peat, coco coir and rockwool have certain adsorption capacity. Part of the regulator will be fixed by the substrate and cannot be absorbed by roots immediately. This means the effective concentration reaching crops is lower. Slightly higher dosage or targeted foliar spraying is often adopted according to the water retention property of the medium.
Foliar application remains the most common method for both hydroponics and substrate systems. Leaf stomata status directly decides uptake efficiency. Spray at proper temperature and avoid strong sunlight. Do not mix regulators with high-concentration foliar fertilizers arbitrarily, which may block stomata and trigger leaf burn.

Key practical reminders:
Conduct small-scale tests on a small batch of plants before large-area use.
Separate the circulation tank when adding regulators to hydroponic systems to prevent cross-contamination of different crop batches.
Record substrate type, solution EC, pH, dosage and crop response for repeated verification.
Extend the interval of application for sensitive leafy vegetables.
When matched with precise environmental control and intelligent fertigation equipment, plant growth regulators can help hydroponic and substrate crops maintain stable growth rhythm, improve fruit setting quality and reduce abnormal growth, bringing more predictable harvests for commercial greenhouse projects.
