Plant Growth Regulators in Hydroponic and Substrate Systems: Key Considerations

Hydroponic and substrate systems differ in how water and nutrients reach the root zone. That difference alone does not determine whether a plant growth regulator can be used, or at what rate. The product label and local authorization remain the deciding references.

Check the approved application method

Some products may be approved for foliar application, others for a specified root-zone use, and some may not be authorized for a particular crop or system. Do not add a product to a nutrient reservoir or recirculating system unless that method is explicitly allowed by the current directions.

Do not adjust the rate based on the growing medium

Peat, coir, rockwool and other substrates differ in water retention and chemical properties. Do not compensate for presumed adsorption by increasing the rate. Use only the product-specific rate and method approved for the crop and market. If the label does not cover the intended system, seek advice from the product registrant or a qualified local crop adviser.

Protect the crop and the system

  • Check whether the crop, cultivar, growth stage and application method match the label.
  • Review compatibility before mixing with fertilizers or other crop inputs; follow all label restrictions.
  • Where an approved use involves a shared irrigation circuit, consider how the system design, crop batches and sanitation procedures affect cross-contamination.
  • Keep records of water quality, nutrient solution management, application details and crop response.

Soilless cultivation can make water and nutrient delivery precise, but it does not make PGR use interchangeable across products or crops. Verify the approved use first, then monitor the crop and system carefully.
