Plant Growth Regulators in Greenhouses: Uses, Limits and Responsible Practice

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are products used to influence plant growth or development. Products differ in active ingredient, formulation, mode of action, approved crops and application method. Some act on plant signaling pathways, but it is inaccurate to make a single claim about every product’s chemistry or its safety for people.

Effects depend on the product and crop

A PGR may be used for a specific purpose such as managing plant height, rooting, flowering, fruit set or maturity where that use is permitted. The response depends on the active ingredient, crop and cultivar, growth stage, application method and growing conditions. A result observed with one product or crop should not be assumed to apply to another.

Follow the current local directions

Before use, confirm that the product is authorized in the relevant market for the crop and intended application. Follow its current label and local requirements for rate, timing, protective measures, re-entry, pre-harvest interval, mixing, storage and disposal. Do not infer a dose from another article, product or crop. Food-safety and residue questions must be answered from product-specific approvals and applicable regulations, not from a blanket statement.

The role of greenhouse equipment

Climate sensors, irrigation controls and production records can help growers understand the conditions around an application and compare crop responses. They cannot determine whether an unapproved use is permitted or replace label directions and qualified agronomic advice.

Treat PGRs as crop- and product-specific tools. Good records and careful observation support better decisions, while local authorization and the product label set the boundaries for use.
